Meridian Brick (formerly Forterra Brick formerly Hanson Brick)
In 2015 the neighbours started hearing about Hanson Brick’s plan to clear-cut approximately 40 acres of prime forest to expand its commercial shale quarrying operations (the east cell) beside the residential Tyandaga neighbourhood in Burlington, Ontario.
Meridian has had two active quarries in the area for decades and has a licence for this third quarry since 1972. However, this “dormant” licence has since become adjacent to a residential neighbourhood.
Aldershot Quarry has been in operation under successive owners since the 1920s, with a single licence issued under the Pits and Quarries Control Act in 1972.
Licence #5500
Rehabilitation
According to the site plan finalized in 2010 under the Aggregate Resources Act, the entire east quarry will be rehabilitated in accordance wit the Greenbelt Plan to 100% forest cover.
The Westhaven Drive subdivision was constructed well after the quarry property had been licenced for aggregate extraction.
